Messi sets new world record •Wins Ballon d’Or for the 4th time

LIONEL Messi, once again, set a new world record on Monday when he won the FIFA Ballon d’Or for a record fourth time.

Before being honoured with the award for 2012 at Kongresshaus, Switzerland on Monday, Messi had previously won it in 2009, 2010 and 2011, making him the fourth football player to win three Ballons d’Or and the second player, along with Michel Platini, to win three consecutive Ballons d’Or.

The Argentinian, who plays professional football at Barcelona FC of Spain, beat his club mate Andres Iniesta and Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese who plays for Real Madrid.

In 2012, Messi not only shattered the goal-scoring record set by German player Gerd Muller who scored 85 goals in a calendar year in 1972; he scored six more, over the same period, to lay another record.
